FEATURING THIS MONTH…Nils Vesk Director of Ideas with Legs

Nils Vesk is a designer turned business innovator. Nils is the lead Innovation Change Maker and founder of the consultancy – Ideas with Legs. Nils is an entrepreneurial design thinker who loves nothing more than taking a great idea from conception to completion. A self confessed innovation junkie, Nils spots innovation successes from around the globe, deconstructs them and then couples them with his latest innovation strategies to accelerate the growth of organisations and increase their success.

Nils Vesk brings over 20 years of design thinking, business strategy, creative thinking, and applied innovation to his engagements. Nils’ innovation and thought leadership programs have seen him deliver programs for some of the most prestigious organisations in the world and Australia. Some of his clients have included the Nestle´, HP, Australian Department of Defence, Microsoft, IBM, Vic Roads, Bluescope Steel and the Commonwealth Bank to name just a few.

Nils is the author of the innovation book ‘Innovation Archetypes – 2017, ‘Ideas with Legs: how to generate and realise ideas’ (2011), Life’s little toolbox: tips for a happier healthier you (2003) and co-author of ‘Ideas: original perspectives on life and business from leading thinkers’ (2006).

When not delivering keynotes, workshops, researching or creating innovation plans for organisations Nils is usually found competing around the world in his hang-glider.
Thinking on your feet: How to go from being ‘left out’ of that big important meeting to being ‘sought out’.
You know what we’re talking about. You’re in that meeting and either your client or your CEO is looking for the killer solution to that big problem that the organisation is facing. You want to add something really valuable but for the life of you, the only solutions that are coming to your head have already been spitballed and were shared by someone else. If you don’t have something valuable to add and soon, you’re not going to be winning any business or if your in the big corporation you can kiss that promotion good bye.Welcome to the real world of having to ‘think on your feet’ in business today. When business operates at a supersonic MACH 3 pace, we don’t have the luxury of taking a few days to think of a solution, especially when someone else is gunning for your business or position. What we need to future proof our business or career and prevent missing out on business or being left out of the next big meeting is being able to quickly analyse a situation, generate insights, followed by fresh ideas and a strategy to execute. In short we need to be able to think quickly and cleverly. We need to be innovative and we’re not just talking ‘out of the box’, we’re talking ‘out of the ball park’ whilst creating a box office hit!

In the innovation consulting and strategising Nils Vesk conducts around the world Nils has found one common trait amongst the participants in executive meetings. The inability to truly be innovative in their thinking to solve problems quickly and consistently.
Whilst the participants in the meetings Nils attends are very smart people (they wouldn’t be in the room if they weren’t), and have much more experience and knowledge about their organisation, what they fail to do is to be able create innovative insights and solutions on demand and under pressure. Yet to the annoyance of some participants Nils seems to come up with the great ideas and potential solutions that the CEO wants to run with.

Now Nils is not an overly smart guy, but what he does has that the others in the boardroom don’t have is a deck of innovation processes that have become second nature to him and enable him to create insights about what & where the real problem & opportunities lie, whilst being able to follow this up with commercially viable fresh ground breaking ideas.

The good news is his clients have been successfully learning ‘how to think on their feet’ and in the upcoming ‘Think Tank’ Nils is going to be sharing how you can start using these ‘think on your feet’ processes so that you can start applying them for immediate results.

Much of what Nils is going to be talking about is the skill sets that very few people have. Some indeed will possess perhaps one core skill set, yet are often at a loss as to being able to think from other fresh perspective quarters. The ‘business smart’ who can ‘think on their feet’ and has a mental deck of quick practical processes to generate insights, ideas, solutions and successful outcomes becomes indispensable and the new ‘go to’ person.
